Lucy Maud Montgomery, was born at Clifton, Prince Edward Island, on November 30, 1874. Montgomery had a lonely childhood. Her mother died when she was two. Her father remarried and after several years she was sent to live with her very strict, religious grandparents. Montgomery attended the Prince of Wales College, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island in 1894 where she earned her teachers license. Between 189596 she attended Dalhousie College, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Montgomery always knew she wanted to be a writer. She had various poems and stories published as a young woman. Then she completed her secondclass teachers certificate in 1894, and her firstclass license in 1895. She took up her first teaching job in Bideford, Prince Edward Island in 1894. She achieved much in her lifetime, putting Prince Edward Island and Canada on the world map. A writer, she published some 500 short stories and poems and twenty novels. Nineteen of the novels were set on Prince Edward Island. Today, Montgomerys novels, journals, letters, short stories, and poems are read and studied by general readers and scholars from around the world. A musical based on Montgomerys first bestseller, Anne of Green Gables, has drawn packed houses for over twentyfive years. Maud died in Toronto on April 24, 1942 and was buried at Cavendish, Prince Edward Island.
