The Aruego Jose in Authors & Aviators Biography Directory

As a child in the Phillipines, Jose Aruego liked to read comic books and draw cartoon animals. There were many different kinds of animals at his familys house, including pigs, horses, dogs, cats, and chickens. He thinks that may be why he likes to draw animals so much, especially animals doing funny things. Sometimes when he is drawing animals he giggles because their expressions are so funny Aruego was a lawyer in the Philippines before he came to the United States to go to art school. His favorite city is New York.Ariane Dewey was born in Chicago, but has also lived in New York. She started painting pictures when she was in the fourth grade. Dewey says she thinks in color. Colors tell her more about the world than shapes or sounds do. She and Aruego have illustrated many books together. Aruego draws the outlines and designs the pages, then Dewey paints the colors. He likes to draw, and she likes to paint, so they share the work. Crocodiles Tale was the first book they made as a team.
